With their repeated participation in [anime theme songs], the members of Kalafina have succeeded in making themselves known to a large audience in Japan, as well as outside their borders. Even better, their name has become inseparable from series such as “Black Butler”, “fate/Zero”, or “Puella Magi Madoka Magica”.
Kalafina is a trio of Japanese singers produced by the renown composer and producer, Yuki Kajiura. In Janurary 2008, Keiko, Wakana and Hikaru, the actual members of the group, made a remarkable debut in the Japanese musical stage with the title “oblivious”. The same year, the group performed the feat of ranking in the Top Oricon List, three singles in a row, with their second and third singles, “spinter/ARIA" and "fairytale”. The three songs served as the theme songs of the anime movie series ”The Garden of Sinners”, on DVD by Kaze.
Most recently, the singles “magia" and "hikari furu" have in turn illustrated two aspects of Puella Magi Madoka Magica (read p.26), both the anime series and the second movie respectively. A mysterious world filled with magic fits perfectly with the dreamlike style of the three singers.
4 Questions for Kalafina:
Tell us about how you met.
Wakana: Kalafina was formed under the impulse of Yuki Kajiura (the composer who worked on “Noir” [and] “.hack//SIGN”, NDR). She was looking for singers who embody her titles on stage. All of us three, we were selected after auditions. Before Kalafina, we didn’t know each other. We met Hikaru at the time of selections. Keiko and I had already met because we have the same management.
How did you choose your name, Kalafina?
Keiko: Kalafina’s name was founded by Yuki Kajiura. It has no particular meaning. In fact, even its writing changes: Kalafina is written in kanji in Asia, and in romaji in the rest of the world. So instead, its sound is important.
How would you describe Kalafina’s style?
Hikaru: Kalafina is a mixture of different musical genres. The group’s harmony stems mostly from the mix of our three voices. Wakana has a voice made for singing classical, while Keiko sings in a very low register, and cannot climb up to the treble. As for me, I have a J-Pop type voice that some have already classified as ”pure”. Fortunately, she is* suitable for Kalafina, because I am incapable of singing rock**, for example! (laughs)
What can you wish for the future?
Wakana: Simply to continue singing in front of as many fans as possible for many years.

*here they use “her” instead of “I” for some reason lol, but i’m pretty sure hikaru’s referring to herself. idk why, don’t ask meeeee //hit
**(my note) THIS IS A GODDAMN LIE //HIT
also, the phrasing in wakana’s part is a bit awkward originally, but i left it as is lol. since i only took french in high school, please tell me if i made any mistakes! /O/
